> General Information

The Waldorf School puts great emphasis on practical activities. Learning from the workplace via some work experience complements school education. Pupils can then learn about the economy and social relationships. They can experience that learning is from, about and for life - a life long learning.

Perception, self-awareness and awareness of others as well as self confidence, reliability and creativity are cultivated. Pupils are encouraged to follow their convictions.

Depending on individual choice and an orientation process, pupils will finish schooling either in Grade 11 with a “final dossier” or undertake a pre-IB year leading to the International Baccalaureate which will take two additional years.

The following guidelines are for information only, each year curriculum will be adjusted according to the needs of the class and pupils.

> The role of the teacher

A teacher called “Regent” will be the point of contact for the whole class, and together with specialised subject teachers and tutors, this constitutes the faculty.

The ‘Regent’ meets the class once a week in order to deal with queries, problems and to give impulses. The ‘Regent’ also teaches his or her class regularly.

> Timetables

The curriculum is divided into 3 equal parts:

  • Language & social sciences
  • Mathematics & natural sciences
  • Arts-crafts & movement
As a general rule, pupils have 10 units of 90 minutes for the more general subjects and 10 units of 60 minutes for Arts-crafts & movements classes, weekly.

Subjects are taught in two-to-four week modules taking into account individual learning processes and levels.

For the last 2 years of secondary, there is sometimes the need to add additional afternoon hours for 8 to 12 weeks.

The Waldorf curriculum aims to provide each age group with content that is adapted to them, to choose carefully  from the many topics available and to conduct lessons in a lively and concrete manner.

In our school current state schoolbooks are not deemed adequate. Pupils receive their study material directly from their teacher and learn to keep and organize folders.

Since there are no schoolbooks, parents are encouraged to stay informed through parent evenings in order to follow their children’s progress.

  • Literature: inventors, discoverers, travels
  • Language science: grammar, reading, spelling, research skills, composition writing, essays

French:

  • Literature: Le Petit Prince, les Contes du baobab, poesie: La Fountaine, Victor Hugo
  • Language science: grammar, reading, research skills, composition writing, essays. Themes: the family, friendship, relationships, stereotypes, cultural differences

English:

  • Literature: works on man as an active being
  • Language science: grammar, tenses, reading, writing, listening speaking, tongue twisters, texts,

Mathematics: Geometry of the circle, algebra, linear equations with one unknown, potencies

Science: Inorganic chemistry, physics, acoustics, optics, human physiology, nutrition

Geography: Africa, culture and nature

History: The Middle Ages, age of discovery and exploration.

Art & Crafts: Knitting, painting, clay modelling, drawing, woodwork, music,

Sport: Cooperative games, rhythmic movement, outdoor activities going for walks / hikes to the nearby woods, jumping with rope plus pupils can join the LASEL a sports club where pupils get to meet pupils from other schools whilst engaging in sport activities such as climbing, triathlon, volley and handball, mountain-biking etc.

Exploring integration & interconnectivity

German: Ballades, drama texts, literature from theatre, the Year Project, presentation techniques.

French:

  • Literature: les Fourberies de Scapin de Molière, Les Philo-fables de Michel Piquemal
  • Language science: introduction to literature, oral expression, theatre, poetry and essays, grammar, vocabulary, conjugation, developing personal thinking on generic subjects like the environment, media


English:

  • Literature: Biographies, Helen Keller, the senses, Dickens, Industrial Revolution , man as an individual in society
  • Language science: grammar, grammar structure, tenses


Mathematics: Algebra, geometry, thales, pythagoras, binomial theorem

Science: Hydraulics, thermodynamics, studying the properties of sugars, starches, proteins , fats and oils, physiology , skeleton, muscles, sexual education

History: Industrial Revolution

Art & Crafts: Painting, clay modelling, drawing, machine sewn garments, woodworking, music

Sport: Cooperative games, rhythmic movement, outdoor activities going for walks / hikes to the nearby woods, jumping with rope, plus students can join the LASEL a sports club where students get to meet students from other schools  whilst engaging in sport activities such as climbing, triathlon, volley and handball, mountain-biking etc.

Theatre: is a main project in year 9 and is in German, physical theatre, song and dance, performance in front of the whole school, group work , responsibility, personal challenges.

German: ‘Nibelungenlied’, dialectic and literary argumentation, poetry, text analysis, interpretation

French: Argumentation in writing, essays, poetry

English: Romanticism, man as a spiritual being, Frankenstein, reported speech

Mathematics: Geometry and surveying, trigonometry, normal functions, linear algebra

Natural sciences:

  • Physics: mechanics
  • Chemistry: salts, reactions, oxidation, reduction
  • Biology: lungs, heart, bloodstream-circulation


Geography:
Water, air, atmosphere, the earth's magnetic field

Technology: History of technology and its influence on humanity

Economy: What is economy? Basics, our present economic systems

Flexible thinking, strengthening the judgment

In year 11 the class is split up into the Pre-IB, preparing pupils for the IB program and the group that will leave the school to either continue to study elsewhere or pursue an apprenticeship in order to work or learn a trade following the “Waldorf curriculum”.

German: Writing job applications presenting oneself e.g. in a job interview, revision of basic compositions, comprehension, composition of text

French: Dissertations, commentary, essay, styles and forms, introduction to literary movements

English: Grammar revision, vocabulary, poetry, essay writing, novel, play

Mathematics: Higher algebra, normal functions, statistics, probability, analytical geometry (vectors)

Natural sciences:

  • Physics: electromagnetism
  • Chemistry: chemical ground rules, atoms and models
  • Biology: cytology


Geography:
 Climate change: causes, consequences and solutions

Theatre: As in year 9 a major project in year 11 but is in French. It is more challenging on a literary or thematic level; evening performances. Aim: group work, responsibility, literary challenge, dealing with adult themes in a non-academic way

A common feature of these internships and projects is the variety of skills acquired and practiced by students: expertise, methodological skills, social skills, personal skills.

Internships

Year 9: Agricultural internship
- 3 weeks internship on a farm in a foreign country

Year  10: Craftsmen internship
- 3-week internship in a manufacturing company
- 5-week internship in the 3rd term in an industry of pupil’s choice.

Year  11: Social internship
- 3-week internship in a social institution

Projects

Year 9: Geology at hand in the Swiss Alpes
- 10-day excursion to the Alps
- Theatre project in German

Year 10: Arthistory at hand in Florence
- 1-week trip to Florence to explore the period of the Renaissance

Year 11: Physics and mathematics at hand
- 1 week of measuring and surveying(Feldmessen)
- Theatre project in French
